How Bypass Filters Works
Bypass oil filters function as a secondary filtration with the purpose of eliminating soot and small particle contaminants from motor oil. AMSOIL filter elements offer high holding capacities with a service life of one to two years, continuously removing soot and other particles too small for the full-flow filter. Continuously clean engine oil means oil lasts longer in service and engines remain in like new condition longer. Bypass filters work with a higher flow restriction to returning analytically clean oil to the engine and work in conjunction with a full-flow filter.
AMSOIL Bypass Oil Filter
Bypass filters operate by filtering oil on a “partial-flow” basis. They draw approximately 10 percent of the oil pump capacity for collecting the extremely small contaminants which are too small for the full-flow filter. Bypass filters have a high pressure differential, causing the oil to filter very slowly allowing for the removal of soot and small particle contaminants. It is called bypass filtration because the oil flows from the engine oil pressure to bypass filter and back to the sump, temporarily bypassing the engine. This continual process eventually cleans the entire oil system making it analytically clean with an absolute efficiency of 98.7 percent at two microns.
