Engine coolant deserves your attention

Engine coolant or antifreeze – whatever you prefer to call it, the fluid performs the same function. As the water pump circulates coolant through the system, heat transfers from the denser metal into the liquid where it’s carried to the radiator and dissipates into the environment. But it’s known as antifreeze since a proper mix lowers the freezing point so it doesn’t gel or expand in the engine like straight water would – that would cause catastrophic damage!

But why does it matter to you? Simply put, if your coolant isn’t up to par, it could mean a serious repair and a bill to go along with it. If your coolant strength isn’t low enough to protect from the coldest weather you see or when engine coolant is low, you can often avoid repairs by topping up or changing the coolant rather than paying for an avoidable fix.

Is engine coolant universal?

For most fluids on the market, engine coolant falls into a few different categories that aren’t interchangeable. Different corrosion inhibitors don’t play well with each other, and inorganic additive technology (IAT) and organic acid coolant technologies (OAT) can react to either gel up or accelerate corrosion.
